Appmilla was engaged to explore the opportunities that AI might offer for ELM Legal Services Ltd, one of the UK’s leading specialists in Will Writing, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Probate, on a programme of AI exploration work.
The engagement was exploratory by design: rather than building production software, Appmilla worked with ELM to produce a set of proof-of-concept builds that could demonstrate what’s possible and inform future development. This included an Agentic RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) platform, built using LangChain and LangGraph, and combining a knowledge base of ELM’s processes, case guidance and regulatory requirements with agents that can reason over multiple steps and retrieve the most relevant information for a given query. This was developed alongside automated workflow experiments designed to take on some of the repetitive, process-driven tasks that sit around case handling.
These proofs-of-concept gave ELM a tangible sense of where AI agents and automation could fit into their day-to-day operations, and a foundation and plan to build on in future.
“The ELM engagement was a real proof point for how we work. We covered a lot of ground in a compressed timeframe, including agentic AI, RAG, and automated workflows, creating tangible working proof-of-concept builds and a plan that gave ELM a genuine foundation to build on. That kind of output simply wouldn’t have been possible without AI-augmented development.” – James Guest, CEO, Appmilla
